Veterans in Touch – Thoughts for a boring month

-

August is a month that has no holidays or events of any significance. That being said, all of us affected by the tornado on June 20 are now starting to see things happening in the month of August.

First of all, I want to give a big shout out to the City of Naperville, the Fire Department, Police Department and Public Works for the outstanding job they did in handling this catastrophe. Public Works was out clearing streets in the middle of the night, Police and Fire Departments were checking on neighbors to make sure everyone was OK. Everyone complains about government from time to time, but the City’s actions renewed my faith in what local government can do for its citizens.

The other thing that made me happy was the way our neighbors and volunteers were out helping each other. From cutting trees away from the homes to helping collect personal items that were blown all over the area by the tornado to passing out food and water to those working, it made me proud to be a citizen of Naperville as well as this subdivision.

I met many neighbors that I would pass during the day, but never stopped to say “hi.”
Guess what? I found out we have many nice neighbors!

Since August is a slow month if you are a Veteran, you should make sure you know where your DD-214 is. Make sure your family knows and would have easy access to it.

Another suggestion is talk to your family about what you did in the military. You don’t have to go into the bad things, but let them know generally what you did. I always tell them the funny and crazy stuff that happens in the military.

If you are not signed up for VA Healthcare, now is the time to do it. The first Tuesday of the month, the Hines Outreach Team will be at the Naperville VFW Post from 10AM until 1:30PM. Make sure you bring your DD-214 and a listing of all your out-of-pocket medical expenses to include any Medicare or insurance premiums, doctor costs and prescriptions. There is no excuse for not being in the system.
