April 8, 2020 Update / COVID-19 DuPage County

-

Above / DuPage County Joint Information Center (JIC) releases daily COVID-19 Case Counts* for DuPage County Health Department. This daily report will keep track of numbers for comparisons with previous posts linked to this one. From now on, look for daily posts instead of weekly tallies. Thanks.

Update from Edward Hospital in response to inquiries regarding rumors.

Repeat from April 7, 2020 / Edward Hospital’s daily census (number of inpatients) is typically 300 and above (Edward has 364 beds). Since COVID-19 began, the daily census is well below that because we took steps to reduce the number of inpatients, including the cancellation of elective surgical procedures.

As of Tues., April 7, 2020, Edward is treating 48 inpatients who have confirmed cases of COVID-19 and another 24 inpatients who are awaiting the results of their COVID-19 tests. This morning, 32 of Edward’s 46 ICU beds were in use. Should there be a surge of COVID-19 patients, Edward has the ability to add 36 more ICU beds.

The COVID-19 patients are from communities throughout the Edward Hospital service area, including Naperville.

DuPage County COVID-19 Media Staff Notes…

Remember always wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds BEFORE preparing any food. Songs to sing? Well, the perennial favorites of “Happy Birthday to you” and the “ABC song” are always good, but my personal favorite? The chorus to “Hotel California” by the Eagles. For more details and info on washing your hands, here’s the direct link to the CDC’s website:

Add cloth-covering facemasks to practice of social distancing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made the recommendation to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus when in public, the use of clothcovering facemasks by the general public while maintaining 6 feet of social distancing. The recommended cloth facemasks are NOT the N95 masks which should still be reserved for first responders and medical workers who have direct contact with coronavirus patients.
