Football Week 7 Preview: Carmel at Benet

-

Benet_600Carmel (4-2, 3-1 East Suburban Catholic) @ Benet (4-2, 2-2 East Suburban Catholic), 7:30PM.

Last week: Carmel won at St. Viator, 38-20; Benet lost to Nazareth, 35-13

Storyline: Still looking to get that elusive fifth victory to become playoff-eligible, Benet returns to Benedictine University tonight aiming to put an end to its two-game losing streak.

Aside from Brad Sznajder pacing the Redwings’ offensive output by rushing for 142 yards and their lone touchdown on 30 carries, the Redwings struggled against highly powered Nazareth a week ago.

The Roarunners raced out to a 35-5 lead behind a pair of Carson Bartels touchdown passes and a 50-yard interception return for a TD from Julian Love.

The task for Benet doesn’t get much easier tonight in the rugged East Suburban Catholic Conference with Carmel coming to town.

The Corsairs come into tonight with the same 4-2 overall record as Benet but on a three-game winning streak that has seen them average 35.7 points a game during that stretch.

Sophomore Rondell Jameson had a huge night on the ground for the Corsairs at St. Viator last week in churning out 180 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries while quarterback Mike Huiras ran for 122 yards and two TDs in their 18-point victory against the Lions.

The Lions are a game behind both Nazareth and Joliet Catholic in the ESCC race.

Benet coach Pat New on Carmel: “(Running the football) is their game and for us to be successful, we got to stop run, specifically stop the quarterback (Huiras) and fullback (Jameson) because those are two of the most dangerous guys in their offense.

“We got to get our offense going, too. I mean, we’ve struggled (the last two weeks). Our output has been seven and 13 in our two losses, so that’s just not good.”
