Editor’s Note: For the first time in PN’s 12 1/2-year  history, the inclement snowy weather delayed our scheduled delivery. If you live outside PN’s delivery area, you’ll find our “flippible” pages online at Latest Issue, located on the top black navigation bar. Otherwise, look for the February issue on your front doorstep today, Feb. 2. PN contracts with an independent service to deliver the monthly publication to your front porch.  If it arrives on your driveway in error, please let us know. Thanks for reading.

To PN & Naperville Community regarding local merchants: You always hear nightmares about a total kitchen remodel. Well, we experienced just the opposite.

We have lived in Naperville over 30 years and decided when we invested in a totally new kitchen to use only local merchants…and we are so happy we did. We chose two well established businesses – Taylormade and Finishes. Both are family-owned and run.

Taylormade is owned by Maureen and Howard Taylor and located in the Cress Creek shopping center. Maureen gave us great advice on how to make the kitchen look modern and fresh and gave us several options. Howard came out and took all the measures and had several great ideas on how to maximize the space. But best of all was the dedicated team of 3 guys who put it all together in less than 3 weeks!! We were only without a sink for a few days. Mark was the Jack of all trades on electric, plumbing and cabinet installation. Matt was key in making the cabinets and the finishes and extra touches are amazing. Randy helped Mark and Matt during the entire 3 week process. We loved their work so much that we decided to add matching cabinets in the attached family room.

Finishes is owned and operated by Beverly and Pat Muzar who have run their business for over 25 years and are located on Washington in the heart of downtown Naperville—a block from Quigley’s Irish Pub where we first met them. Pat and his brother Jeff and Valdis put in our hardwood floor. But what makes the kitchen the best is the outstanding creative work of the ceramic tile backsplash by Valdis. It’s absolutely amazing!!! And thanks to Bev for recommending the tiles!!

We have a complete new kitchen in less than four weeks and love it !!! After this great experience, I will shop local all the time!

—Pat Herr

Editor’s Note:  PN welcomes positive experiences regarding local businesses. Small independent businesses are the community’s leading job creators. Their owners’ dedication to customer service and reasonable margins on products often make it tough for them to market their businesses as openly and often as larger corporate merchants. We absolutely, positively appreciate the mix of all sizes of businesses that set up shop and headquarters here, all to help provide local jobs, needed now more than ever. We must admit, our hearts are with the little guy. Thanks to Pat Herr for thinking of PN.

To PN: I contribute to TaxHelp.org, a recently launched site that provides consumers with straightforward tax information. The comprehensive site includes over 150 free tax help resources, tax guides for different financial situations, state and city-level tax data, and a searchable database of over 200,000 CPAs.

With tax season upon us, our site is timely and useful. Given your interest in [Majestic Site], I thought you’d like to take a look at our tax site. All of our resources build on IRS resources, best practices, and industry tips, but is presented in a navigationally friendly and easily consumable layout.

Use of the resources is available free of charge and without any sort of registration; take a look around TaxHelp.org and let me know what you think.

—Carol Phillips, Public Relations Assistant, Tax Help

Editor’s Note: Many Naperville CPAs are featured on this website as well as just about anything you want to know about tax rates in Illinois at TaxHelp.org.  That said, no matter where you live in the U.S., you can locate local CPAs and more on this handy free resource.

To PN:  I have been presenting on heroin in Naperville, Illinois, and surrounding communities for three years. Through the years of presenting, hearing mothers share their heartfelt stories about losing their child to a drug overdose/suicide, and working with clients who are addicts, or in recovery, I have learned what is working and what is not working, and I want to change the approach we are taking to address mental illness and drug abuse. I want to share this new approach and get the word out to others with hope in preventing another death to drugs, suicide, or a school shooting.

I wrote a book titled “Dear Counselor…” which stems from a monthly column I write for the Sun Times Media Newspaper. It is an inspiring guide filled with tips and tools to help conquer this battle with offering healthy coping skills to deal with substance abuse, college binge drinking, productive parenting, self-esteem, mental illness, body rocking, child sexual abuse, anger, suicide and more.

I welcome you to visit my web page www.achievingsolutionscounseling.com.
