Chinese New Year: The Year of the Dragon begins Feb. 10

-

For many, the time to ring in the 2024 new year was months ago. But for those who follow the lunar calendar, the new year has barely started. Red lanterns, dumplings, and red envelopes. These are considerably different from the champagne and party popper-filled celebrations of New Year’s Eve on the last day of December, but it is no less valuable for it.

On February 10, 2024, the Year of the Dragon begins, and with it, Chinese New Year celebrations. But what does the Year of the Dragon actually mean? Firstly, it represents one of the twelve zodiac animals. In total, the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig make up the twelve zodiac animals that are cyclical on a twelve-year basis. Meaning in another twelve years, in 2036, it will be the Year of the Dragon again.

The Dragon itself represents several things in Chinese culture; it represents strength, power, and good fortune. Dragons are also historically significant in that Chinese emperors were often believed to have been descended from dragons. Overall, it indicates that in 2024, especially for those born in the Year of the Dragon, it’s going to be a lucky year.
So why not join the festivities? Making dumplings or starting your spring cleaning are among many traditional Chinese New Year activities.

Red envelopes, in particular, are of great importance for bringing good luck. Traditionally, red envelopes stuffed with money are given from parents to their children as tokens of well wishes for the new year. The red envelopes themselves are a symbol of life, luck, and happiness.

All of these traditions and more make up the rich culture behind Chinese New Year’s.
