At Aurora Avenue near Route 59, a sign posts the population at 144,560. More recently after a Special Census in 2018, the City’s population was adjusted upward to 147,841. What will the Census 2020 count be?
Posted, July 20, 2020 / Beginning at 6PM on Thurs., July 23, the 2020 Census Naperville Complete Count Committee will host a Facebook Live panel discussion regarding the 2020 US Census. This nonpartisan event is the second in an ongoing series to make sure “Everyone Counts – Count Everyone,” organizers said.
Under the leadership of Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and Count Committee Liaison Mark Rice, the first event attracted more than 300 people logged in for a discussion about the Census count of every person in the U.S. that has happened every 10 years since 1790.
Responses to the 2020 Census will help determine where $675 billion is distributed each year to communities nationwide for clinics, schools, road and more regarding planning needs for the future. Responses also are used to redraw legislative districts and determine the number of seats Illinois will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The 2020 Census is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. Panel discussion moderator Rice announced that Naperville Complete Count Committee includes representatives from 135 Naperville-area groups and is currently tracking #1 in the U.S. regarding U.S. Census Self Response for cities with more than 140,000 residents.
Sanders said her agency will continue to hire and train workers to start door-to-door counts in mid-August. The self-response phase ends Oct. 31, 2020, according to www.2020Census.gov.
Rice extended gratitude to Ashfaq Syed for coordinating the Panel Discussion, developing the 2020 Census Naperville Complete Count Committee Facebook page and for taking an active role in its many activities.

Mindful that the Census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2, the United States has counted its population every 10 years since 1790. This publication has been posting news about population growth in Naperville for years. Since early in 2020, the United States Census 2020 logo has appeared in many online stories to remind folks to be counted. Click here to link to PN’s story after the special Census in 2018.
