Art Talk – Art in the Time of COVID-19

-

Publisher’s Note / The monthly deadline for stories published by contributing columnists is the 20th of the month prior to print publication. This story appears in the April 2020 issue of PN, now available at local supermarkets. Columns are published in rotation a few at a time on different days throughout the month. Thanks for reading in print monthly and online daily. An “update” regarding the CARES Act follows Debbie Venezia’s column.

I wasn’t going to do it… I didn’t want to write about the world’s spinning out of control. Terms like hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and social distancing were going to be off the table. And, there was to be no mention of those scammers who are exploiting us and profiting off our fears. Instead. I wanted to write about something that would be inspiring, something that would take us away from the scourge of COVID-19 – even if it’s only for 20 seconds.

But it’s difficult to disengage from constant updates filling the newsfeeds, inboxes, and air waves. Remembering the words of Ma Joad in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath, I am reminded that “We ain’t gonna die out. People is goin’ on – changin’ a little, maybe, but goin’ right on.”

And you know what? Ma’s right! Look at the way that arts organizations are quickly adapting to the mandated changes we are facing. Instead of canceling their presentation of the acclaimed Drum Tao 2020 Taiko Drummers, leaders of College of DuPage’s McAninch Art Center transformed their live performance into a live stream (available now at Atthemac.org). Home viewers were so impressed that they donated over $4,400 in support of the arts.

Other organizations are coming up with creative ways to stay engaged and connected, as well. Hinsdale’s The Community House just announced its “Stay Home, Have Fun” challenge. Every week day, a new stimulating challenge will be announced. Record yourself and your family members and post it on social media for a chance to win the title of Best Video of the Day! More details are available at Thecommunityhouse.org.

A quick internet search will bring up many more options. For example, Google Arts & Culture partnered with over 500 international museums and galleries to create virtual tours and exhibits. And don’t forget about literature! Anderson’s Bookshops remain open and offer curbside pick up and $.99 media mail shipping (andsersonsbookshop.com).

You can also download free public domain ebooks or find a favorite classic on your bookshelf. Another thought: why not try an internet art course and discover a hidden talent? Be open to the possibilities. Above all, stay positive and please keep the words of Louisa May Alcott close to your heart: “Be comforted, dear soul! There is always light behind the clouds.”
