As spring breaks wrap up, Mayor Steve Chirico asks community to use best practices to keep Naperville safe

“The City continues to take steps to stay ahead of the COVID 19 situation in our community,” said Mayor Steve Chirico in an email message to the community.

“Yesterday I participated in a virtual session held by the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative with 200 other Mayors from across the country. The steps and decisions that we have been making are based on lessons learned from our peer communities. We are confronting this challenge head on and will continue to institute best practices to keep our community safe throughout the duration of this pandemic.

“I am asking all our residents, if you have family members returning from spring break trips please encourage them to self-quarantine for the recommended 14 days.

“We know that people can be carrying the virus before symptoms surface, which puts everyone they come in contact with at risk of contracting the virus.

“Remember our focus needs to be on the ‘we’ instead of the ‘me’,” the Mayor concluded.

Editor’s Note: According to reports online, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker will host a press conference at 3PM Fri., March 20, 2020, where he is expected to order all Illinois residents to “shelter in place” beginning Sat., March 21.

Just as other states, the order will mean residents can still visit grocery stores and pharmacies, fill cars with gas and take walks outdoors. All local roads, including the interstate highways and tollways, also will remain open to traffic.  WGN says it will stream the press conference live on WGN-TV.

PN UPDATE / Simply consider that every event and other community meeting or happening is canceled for now. If you have someone’s phone number, call for more information. Thank you.

We also were inspired by the words by Rabbi Yosef Kanevsky, forwarded by Naperville Municipal Band Board President Jon Walter…

“Every hand that we don’t shake must become a phone call that we place. Every embrace that we avoid must become a verbal expression of warmth and concern. Every inch and every foot that we physically place between ourselves and another, must become a thought as to how we might be of help to that other, should the need arise.” —Rabbi Yosef Kanevsky of Los Angeles
