Above / Quiz Night now will be officiated by a new Quiz NIght Team of Masters. Mike Reilly, Nancy Quigley, Ryan Simkins, Paul Santucci, Tim Johnston and Kent Schielke will lead the way at 7PM on the first Tuesday of the month.
Quigley’s Irish Pub will host its almost-monthly 2019-2020 West Suburban Irish Quiz Night at 7PM Tues., Oct. 1, Nov. 5, Dec. 3, Jan. 7, Feb. 4 March 3, April 7, May 5, June 9 and Aug 4. Note the engaging team event is played on the first Tuesday of the month except for July and September.
Whenever WSI Quiz Night is scheduled, a large number of regulars arrive with timely and whimsical names for their teams taken right out of the day’s headlines. Prepared to focus on trivia—all that useless information that has little or no value—as many as 28 teams put their heads together to share their knowledge and compete for silly prizes.
New teams arrive monthly and quickly catch the spirit of good humor. Competition is fierce as contestants compete for the Best Name, Best Team Spirit, Best Round and Overall Highest Score.
WSI Quiz Night regular Meg Landek has been playing for nearly a decade. She said she’s eager to get back in the monthly routine. Teaming up has given her a great excuse to get together with her cousins, Landek explained, noting they’ve won often over the years and her team is saving its prize money in a lucky pot.
“Perhaps when we win enough, we’ll all come early and have dinner at Quigley’s before Quiz Night,” Landek quipped.
Teaming up to play (2 to 10 members on a team) is free of charge. Simply bring a pen or pencil to fill out the game sheets.
And what was the biggest unknown for October’s Q&A? Who will be the new WSI Quiz Master? Time will tell.
Quigley’s Irish Pub is located at 43 E. Jefferson Ave. in downtown Naperville.
Memories of August 6, 2013, & August 6, 2019
Back in 2013, when the West Suburban Irish Quiz Master Chuck Corrigan kicked off the 8th season of Quiz night at Quigley’s Irish Pub on Tues., Aug. 6, the sports-minded players fell short of success when teams with A-Rod-inspired names were unable to appeal quiz scores.
Twenty-one teams competed for bragging rights in the trivial evening. The prizes of the night were ten-packs of Twinkies, fresh off the production line.
Quiz Master Corrigan gave a shout out for Mary Corrigan who puts together the prize packages, tied with current events.
In round three, sixteen teams had a perfect score in the category “Cruisin'” and WSI quiz masters were unable to hand out prizes. They had to double up for round four (Frankly, they did not have enough Twinkies!) juicing up the pot for the overall winner.
The Quiz Master fumbled a World Series-inspired baseball question in regard to the 1988 World Series and Kirk Gibson, blaming the lighting, and quiz teams responded with PED-inspired negativity.
Unusually high scores dominated the evening of the seasonal opener. Bibulous teams had the opportunity for extra study and rest in July. (Quiz night takes a break in July and September due to annual Naperville festivals associated with Independence Day and Labor Day.)
Top winners on Aug. 6, 2013, were “Our Suspension Is Missing A-Rod” in first place, followed by “Nuns We’re Not” in second place. “Paula Dean’s Bearded Warriors” were recognized for “Best Team Spirit.” Judges awarded “Juicin’ up for Quiz Night” with the prize for “Best Team Name.”
That Tuesday evening the questions were piped out to the popular patio so everyone could participate.
Everybody knows their names!
Sometimes during August Quiz Nights, City Councilmen arrive late to play because the City Council meeting traditionally held on the first Tuesday of the month is canceled for National Night Out.
For a trivia bonus, a question could be, “Do you know the name of the City Councilman who stopped by after Naperville Night Out on Aug. 6, 2013?”
WSI Quiz Night officials, Quiz Master Corrigan and Emcee Mike Reilly, typically greeted the visiting councilmen by name. The elected officials have been known to add that they always enjoy a beverage at Quigley’s, mindful that Quiz Night throughout the year conflicts with City Council meetings.
Whenever Chuck Corrigan wrapped up the fun-filled festivities, usually about 9PM, he’d add, “Nobody goes home a loser at Quiz Night!”
Recap of WSI Quiz Night / Tuesday, August 6, 2019
During the August 2019 wrap up, Nancy Quigley was eager to express gratitude to Mary Corrigan and Chuck Corrigan for their dedication to WSI Quiz night for 13 lucky years.
“Imagine 13 years!” Quigley said. “All the work they put into the trivia questions and prizes to make everything run so smoothly that everyone feels like a winner.”
And she added, “We’re so grateful for Chuck’s clever categories, themes and questions and for Mary’s silly prizes in pretty packages… From now WSI Quiz Night will be called ‘Corrigan Quiz Night at Quigley’s.'”
Later she added, “On second thought…Let’s make sure when we return in October that our WSI Quiz Nights are as attractive and as much fun as the ones organized by the Corrigans before we put their name on it. I’ll be doing the prizes from now on. Mary will be a hard act to follow… But I’m working at it!”
