Naperville Gardener – How to have an award-winning landscape – Course #102

-

I hope everyone has removed their weeds and tidied up their garden beds as I suggested last month. It’s an ongoing task to keep the weeds at bay, but after a major clean-up is done, it’s much more manageable. Perhaps you replaced the thistles, dandelions, errant grass, etc., with some pretty flowers. Good for you!

Remember that a bare patch of soil is a welcome mat for weeds. Fill it with something – flowers (annual or perennial), ground cover or mulch. As I weed, I usually have a little bucket of mulch with me as I remove the intruder, scuff up the soil and cover the spot with a handful of mulch.

Now take a look at your home landscape. We had a hard winter and besides that, the diseases and insects that are killing our evergreens are showing the fruits of their labors. Enough of waiting to see if your shrubs and trees are going to get better. Chances are great that they won’t. Call a certified arborist for advice which is usually free.

My new rallying cry for the summer is, “If it’s brown, cut it down!” I am sure that you join me in wanting our community to look lush, green and inviting for all of our friends and family to admire and enjoy!

My son, Christian, is coming for a visit soon from Arizona where instead of lawns, they have rocks and sand. Everywhere you look, it’s brown with just little, short-lived splashes of color.

Christian comes “home” in July to “cool off.” I keep hoping that he will be reminded of what he’s missing as he lives and bakes in the dry heat surrounded by of cinderblock fences and cacti and move back here where he and his family belong! At his home, he put grass in his backyard so he could have a croquet court, an improvement from the artificial turf at his previous home. So maybe you can take the boy out of the Midwest, but you can’t take the Midwest out of the boy!

Let’s all work to make our neighborhoods look the best ever and let’s be proud of our beautiful community!
