The History Detective – The Underground Press

-

James Givler

Does anyone have copies of pamphlets printed by Napervillian James Givler? James Hamilton Givler was the grandson of David Givler, the owner/editor of The Naperville Clarion. The Clarion newspaper was owned and edited by the Givler family from its founding in 1868 to the time it was sold in 1951. Rollo Givler, the son of David, sold the newspaper to Californian Mel Hodell. Jim Givler, the son of Rollo, was an associate editor of the newspaper.

James Givler was born in 1913 and attended Naperville schools. He was elected the Secretary of his Junior Class in 1929. Givler attended the Medill School of Journalism and Northwestern University. When he was 24 years old, he was elected the Secretary to the Association of Commerce of Naperville, the youngest person in the United States (in 1938) to hold such office.

Givler was involved with the DuPage County Civic Fund Drive in 1946 and was active in the Naperville Boy Scouts in 1949. Givler was elected to the Naperville Township board in the fifth justice position, which he vacated upon his move to Springfield, Ill in 1952. Givler was first married to Anna Kegel. After her death in 1954, he married Jean Ingle in 1959.

Between 1964 and 1974, Givler’s editorial comments were printed in the Chicago Tribune. Among other things, he gave his opinion on Watergate and President Carter’s election. There was even a short description of his three days as a substitute teacher in an inner-city, Chicago school.

The Givler pamphlets I am looking for were mentioned by Herb Matter, Jr. in his 1990 Naperville Sun column, “Dear Arch.” I do not know what the pamphlets contained; I suspect politics. Givler called his operation, The Prairie Press and printed the literature in the basement of the Matter Insurance Agency at 215 S. Washington after the Clarion press (at 210 S. Washington) was sold. James Givler lived in Aurora before his death in 1990. If you have seen these pamphlets, please let me know.
