Edwin Earl Sargent was born March 8, 1866, in Lisle Township, DuPage County, Illinois.

He was the son of Marquis Lafayette Sargent and Lois Maria Ingalls. Edwin was educated in the public schools of Naperville, supplemented with a commercial course at the North-Western College (now North Central College) in 1884.

Edwin married Celia N. Sprague Royce, widow of George E. Royce, on October 23, 1902. From this union three children were born: Lois, who married Matthew Francis Taggart; Charles Earl; and Caryl, who married Ralph Eugene Bentz.

Until the age of 31, he was engaged in agricultural pursuits. Edwin then went to work for the Dolese and Shepard Company at the Naperville quarry, where he served as manager of the teaming department and later as paymaster.

From 1904 to 1909 he embarked in a livery and teaming business of his own named the Naperville Stable which was located at the Southwest Corner of Jackson Avenue and Main Street across from the Pre-Emption House.

Always active, Edwin was a member of the Naperville Association of Commerce and the Naperville Cemetery Association.

Edwin became the proprietor of the Fountain Garage, where he sold Reo automobiles. And in the 1920’s, he became a painting contractor. Edwin was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the First Congregational Church.

He also was a member of Euclid Lodge No. 65, A.F.&A.M. and served as Master of the Lodge in 1897, 1898 and 1907. He was a member of Euclid Chapter No. 13, R.A.M. and served as High Priest of the Chapter in 1933 and 1934. He was also a member of Aurora Commandery No. 22, Knights Templar, Althea Chapter No. 206, O.E.S., and the Mystic Shrine of Chicago.

Edwin Earl Sargent died October 16, 1937, in Aurora, Kane County, Illinois. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church with the Reverend Nelson W. Wehrhan officiating. Edwin was buried in Naperville Cemetery with members of Euclid Lodge No. 65 performing the simple Masonic funeral services at the grave.
