A group of students from Metea Valley High School will host the 7th Annual Kyra’s Idea … Angie’s Hope, a fundraiser to support finding a cure for SMA, beginning at 4PM Sat., Sept. 21.
For the last 6 years, the students, most of whom met at May Watts Elementary School, have organized penny drives, massive garage sales and numerous parties, so far raising $95,000 to fund research for SMA. Their motto is “Together we will find a cure.”
This year’s event, “Strike Out SMA,” will be a large baseball-themed, youth-inspired pasta party at The Foundry, located at 85 Executive Drive in Aurora.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at www.AngiesHope.org. There will be music, games and a silent auction. The young organizers say the best part is all of the proceeds go directly to FSMA, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for SMA.
What is SMA?
SMA, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, is a motor neuron disease affecting the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. SMA is the Number 1 genetic killer of children under the age of 2.
The fundraiser is an opportunity to make plans and make a difference by helping a group of dedicated teens continue to help a very close friend and fellow student stricken with this devastating disease.
“The kids are so excited to break $100,000,” said Kris Scadden, Kyra’s mother.
For more information, visit www.angieshope.org or www.fsma.org. All of the proceeds from this event will go directly to the Families of S.M.A. Charity, a nonprofit organization.
