Journey with Autism – President’s Day falls in February

-

The month of February is more than bold cards and lovely flowers proclaiming our love for those in our lives. Joining this holiday of hearts and candy is our country’s tribute to Presidents.

When we hear Abraham Lincoln and George Washington’s name, the image of hard-faced men, blank eyes and no emotion comes to mind. Those of us who have seen the many movies and plays depicting these men who ran the nation may link them to hearts and minds beyond our history books. Yet, how they lived, what they sacrificed and endured to run our nation can never fully be appreciated or understood. Being president is the most important and difficult job in our world. With the great power, it is said great problems can be sure to go hand and hand.

The biggest looming responsibility the great men we honor and celebrate had was the task of healing broken polarized men and women and pulling our country together. Whether it was war or hard time or being a nation broken by natural disasters or the bitter differences among people, leaders we know and hold in our hearts and minds are the ones who inspired us to join together and create better lives for everyone.

With great power comes the chance to affect the most change. Love is in the air.  Love heals, so let’s bring a valentine to our country with hope. As with our legendary presidents, it will be a time of remembering that the best of times in our history are when we learn to live together loving our similarities, and respecting our differences.
