Healthy bodies, healthy minds and healthy lives all begin with the power of play. And the YMCA has been a good place to start since the organization first was founded in London, England, on June 6, 1844. Today more than 2,600 Ys serve 10,000 communities across the nation.

Fast forward nearly 180 years to April 20, 2024, when folks at the Fry Family YMCA hosted a Healthy Kids Day that included a ribbon cutting to showcase all the recently finished upgrades in the gymnasium, thanks to the generosity of a gift from the Robert and Dorothy Broadwell Trust.

Looking forward, the Y will continue “to strive to be the head, heart and home of the Naperville community, empowering all ages to thrive, make healthy decisions and discover new ways of having fun.”

Photos featured below captured the ribbon cutting with Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli, Fry Family YMCA Executive Director Erika Wood, Y Board members and staff as well as Kathy and Randall Broadwell. The generous gift for the gymnasium at the Fry Family YMCA was presented in honor of Randall’s parents, Robert and Dorothy Broadwell.

Mayor Wehrli also read a proclamation that included a brief history of the Fry Family YMCA that opened in 1995.

Afterward, families enjoyed a free day of play that included learning and building skills that will keep them active through the summer months and beyond.

In addition to meeting therapy dogs in the program at Edward that contributes to the healing and well-being of patients at the hospital, families had the opportunity to visit the Naperville Noon Lions Club booth to check eye health of local youth, ages six months to six years, with a Plus Optix Vision Screener.

Festivities included inflatables, raffles and games in the gymnasium as well as vehicle displays provided by the Naperville Police and Fire Departments, complete with opportunities to meet first responders who serve the community.
