So what were all those ‘witches’ brewing up in Central Park?

On October 21, Members of the Naperville Woman’s Club held their monthly meeting outside of their clubhouse where their property is located adjacent to Central Park in downtown Naperville.

The Broomstick Dancers, all members of the Naperville Woman’s Club, posed for a photo.

Attired in witches costumes topped with hats, the fun-loving women gathered by the Gazebo to celebrate their annual “Witches Night Out Naperville,” held in October, an event that was canceled for 2020.

“Naperville Woman’s Club does not want our tradition to fade,” said Past President Donna Shaw, who now serves as Program Chair. “So we’re holding a members-only event, “Witches Time Out,” around our clubhouse in Central Park on October 21. Social distancing and mask wearing will be emphasized.”

Creative members of the Naperville Woman’s Club in witch costumes met in Central Park for lunch and more.

Plans included box lunches ordered from and delivered by Jason’s Deli, a celebratory witches’ broom dance, a “best mask” contest, ghost stories and a live auction, noted Mary Scroch.

Ann Jansen said members donated new items and handmade creations on display for the auction. After lunch, the bidding began, and one-by-one items were auctioned in a spirited way to help raise some funds for the service club’s charitable giving.

Funds also were raised via little golden bags stuffed with special goodies, tagged with incantations. The spells cast a magical formula intended to trigger “good health and wellness” on members who purchased them.

As winner of the “Best Mask Contest,” Geri Armitage received a big basket of goodies from emcee Donna Shaw, who is Program Chair for 2020-21.

Six-year member Geri Armitage won the “best mask” competition for the web design she created using a white paint marker to paint a spider web on a black mask, complete with orange plastic spiders.

Two members read ghost stories about haunted houses in Naperville.

The other ghost storyteller, Melody Coleman, read aloud a story from “Naperville’s Haunted Memories” that shed light on a dark mystery at 105 Ellsworth Street.

Members of the Naperville Woman’s Club look forward to the return of Witches Nigh Out Naperville at Naper Settlement in October 2021.

Meanwhile, members are following local protocols to be safe and healthy for a bewitching Halloween.

Chartered in 1897, the Naperville Woman’s Club is located in the historic “Old Stone Church” at 14. S. Washington Street. NWC President now is Sandra Baker McKeon. For more information about programs, membership and philanthropy at the Naperville Woman’s Club, visit www.napervillewomansclub.org.
