Fire Prevention 24-7 – Resuming fire safety

-

Happy August, Naperville! The Naperville Fire Department is excited to announce that since the State has moved to Phase 4, we are ready to resume our Senior Home Fire Safety Surveys! These visits are geared toward any senior resident who is living independently. The Senior Home Fire Safety Surveys involve a walk-through of the residence, where we can help identify any fire or fall hazards. The team also will be equipped to install new **10-year battery operated smoke alarms if needed, as well as provide a new carbon monoxide alarm. Need a fire extinguisher? You’ll get that too! Recommendations for safety improvements will be made as well. Those of you that choose the in-person visit, rest assured that the firefighters will practice proper social distancing, and will wear a mask/gloves. If you would feel more comfortable having a virtual visit, we can do that too!

Did I forget to mention the best part? The program is FREE!

Falling in and around the home is a top cause of injuries to older adults. Older adults are also at a greater risk than others of perishing in a house fire. Many of these and other injuries result from hazards that are easy to overlook, but also easy to fix. By spotting these hazards and taking simple steps to correct them, you can prevent injuries to yourself or visitors to your home.

If you would like to take part in this senior initiative, email me at soraya.mclaughlin@naperville.il.us to get placed on the schedule. **If your smoke alarms are hard wired, we can’t change those out, but can discuss options with you.

CPR

CPR classes have also resumed! Visit www.naperville.enrollware.com/calendar to see class availability. We now have some online course options, with in-person testing available. To get more information email daryl.macdonald@naperville.il.us.

As we navigate through these unprecedented times, let’s not forget to always stay safe, stay vigilant, and remember that we are all in this together.
