Grilling and Fireworks

Well, we did it Naperville! We are now in Phase 3 and are beginning to see some good weather and warmer temperatures. Summer weather means cookouts, Fourth of July fireworks, and all sorts of campfire fun as families across the country take advantage of the warm temps. Let’s not forget family reunions, picnics and possibly a summer vacation. Roasting marshmallows by the bonfire is fun, but it’s also important that everyone stays safe by observing a few simple safety tips.

Don’t let barbecue grease build up. Whether you’re using a charcoal or a gas grill, it’s important to keep it clean to prevent accidental grease fires caused by all the gunk that can accumulate on a grill over time. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Additionally, extra propane tanks should be kept outside or in a shed, not in the garage. Did you know that if you can open the lid to your grill, and it is touching the house, it is too close? Place your grill on the opposite side of the deck or patio while grilling. Annually more than 8,000 Americans are injured by fireworks and grill fires. More than half these injuries occur during the first week of July.

In addition to outdoor cooking, improper use of fireworks causes more than 6,000 fires and more than $8 million in damage. Did you know that sky lanterns are illegal in Illinois? And that sparklers reach up to 1,800 degrees?! Keep them out of small hands, and leave the fireworks to the professionals.

Summertime should be a time for fun and making happy memories. Knowing a few safety tips will ensure that everyone has an enjoyable summer!
