This year the AAUW Naperville Area branch celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Used Book and Media Sale. Originally a small art and book sale in 1968, it was transformed into the first official AAUW Used Book Sale in October of 1969 which was held at the Nichols Library. Over the last 50 years the book sale has continued to grow and moved from the Nichols Library to several local churches, Naperville Central High School, Neuqua Valley High School, Celebration Community Center, and finally to the current location of Washington Junior High School, 201 N. Washington Street.
In 1992, the book sale was moved from October to June. In 2009, media such as DVDs, CDs and Vinyl records were added to the sale.
The first sale funded a scholarship of $250 enabling a local woman to complete her senior year at North Central College. In 1971, a named scholarship was created to enable a mature, female student (26 or older) to return to college and complete her degree. In 1974, the scholarship was re-named the Angeline Gale Memorial Scholarship to honor a Naperville High School teacher and counselor and part-time instructor of International Relations at North Central College. The scholarship is completely funded by the AAUW Naperville Area Book and Media Sale.
Since the inception of the book sale, AAUW Naperville Area has raised over $100,000 in scholarship funds.
This year’s 4-day AAUW Naperville Area Used Book and Media Sale will be held beginning Wed., June 12. Hours will be 6PM to 9PM June 12, 9AM to 8PM June 13-14, and 9AM to 12:30PM on June 15.
