Original Post, May 1, 2019 / When the Special Olympics World Games opened in Abu Dhabi in March 2019, Naperville’s Grace Seiboldt was among more than 7,000 athletes from around the world who attended the opening day ceremony. Seiboldt, 22, completed in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle races as one of 215 athletes representing the U.S. She returned to Naperville with three medals.

Seiboldt, a 2015 Neuqua Valley High School graduate who is on the autism spectrum, also serves as a global messenger for Special Olympics Illinois, spreading her story about successfully competing in the Special Olympics.

“Grace Seiboldt Day,” proclaimed on April 16, 2019, by Mayor Steve Chirico, is another way to raise awareness and to share kindness, acceptance and understanding every day.

Pictured here with her medals, she just had received a proclamation during public recognition at the April 16 City Council meeting.

Following the presentation outside Council Chambers, Seiboldt also was surrounded by family, friends and neighbors, adding to the gracious and touching tributes to her determination and success.

Naperville City Council takes oath May 5 at City Hall

The last Naperville City Council meeting on April 16, 2019, also marked the end of the history-making session of public servants for Mayor Steve Chirico who has headed the 9-member group since May 3, 2015.

For the first time since 1969 when the Council-Manager form of local government was established, the City Council was balanced with four women and four men when the mayor and eight city council members took the oath of office to serve on May 3, 2015. Moments after all nine new members were sworn to serve, they took their seats at the dais for the first time, now representing the city with up to three 4-year term limits, a change supported by voters in a 2010 referendum.

On May 3, 2015, the Naperville City Council began a new day when John Krummen, Kevin Coyne, Rebecca Boyd-Obarski, Judy Brodhead*, Steve Chirico* as Mayor, Paul Hinterlong* Patty Gustin, Becky Anderson and Kevin Gallaher took seats at the dais. (*Served previously) (PN 2015 File Photo)

At the end of the April 16, 2019,  meeting, Councilman Paul Hinterlong led the group by expressing appreciation to Councilwoman Becky Anderson and Councilwoman Rebecca Obarski for their service as they finished their four-year terms, opting not to run for re-election. Mayor Chirico recognized that recently-elected City Council newcomers Patrick Kelly and Theresa Sullivan were in attendance. Mayor Chirico and Councilmen Hinterlong and Gustin were re-elected in the Consolidated Election on April 2, 2019.

At 3PM Sun., May 5, the recently-elected mayor and city council representatives will take the oath of office and join the other four councilmen at the dais, taking seats on either side of the Naperville Mayor that represent their longevity and vote count.

The public is invited to the ceremony in City Council Chambers.
