Residents reminded to take precautions during upcoming dangerously cold weather

-

The City of Naperville reminds residents to take precautions to ensure their health, safety and well-being during the upcoming period of excessively cold weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the Naperville area from 6 p.m. tonight, Jan. 24, through noon on Friday, Jan. 25. Wind chills between -20 and -30F are expected overnight into Friday morning; with these conditions, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes. Current forecasts call for excessively cold temperatures to continue throughout the next week.

The following are tips to protect yourself and loved ones from cold-related illnesses during this period of extreme weather:

  • Know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
  • Wear proper clothing, including dressing in layers of loose-fitting clothing.
  • Make sure body parts most often affected by frostbite are covered in warm, dry clothing. These include
  • your nose, ears, toes, cheeks, chin, and fingers.
  • Wear hats, scarves, and mittens or gloves.
  • Bring your pets indoors.
  • Try to stay indoors as much as possible.
  • Check on the elderly, those with illnesses, and others who may need special attention during this time.
