Senior Voices – Holiday mood

-

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. Reason? Because people are in a cheerful, happy mood. Most of them.

There are, of course, some who are down. But the reason I really like it is because of my hat. Well, how can a hat make a person upbeat and cheerful? It’s a hat with a Dr. Seuss spiral on the top with a white pom-pom on the end. I have worn that hat for many years and it always makes people smile.

When I wear it down the street, it is unbelievable how many people smile. Many say, “I like your hat!”

I wear it at the airports when flying to Florida for Christmas and everyone gives a big smile. One passenger on the plane called as I was entering the plane and said, “I would like to buy your hat! No matter the price, just tell me and I’ll buy it!”

People really laughed at that.

My daughter who met me at the airport, told the people, “I’m waiting for my Mother, and you will know her when you see her!”

I wore it every year to the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast at the Y. My neighbor Rosemary always picked me up and one year when I went to get in the car she asked where my hat was. I said I just thought I wouldn’t wear it that year. She made me go back into the house and get it. I was glad I did as so many said they looked forward to my hat.

All that said, it’s too bad that people can’t say “Hello” and smile to other people more often.

One little boy said, “Look, Mommie, there is Dr. Seuss!”

And I said to him, “No, I’m Mrs. Seuss, and I live in Whoville.” He was so tickled.

One of the advantages of being a senior is that you can enjoy doing things to bring enjoyment to other people without feeling embarrassed.

Chuckle Time: Knock. Knock. Who’s there? Boo. Boo who? Don’t cry! We promise to find the best Dr. Suess jokes! For example, why doesn’t the Grinch like knock knock jokes?… Because there’s always Whos there!

Editor’s Note / The Mayor’s Community Breakfast at the Fry 95th Street Y begins at 6:30AM Fri., Dec. 7. Look for Bev Frier having the most wonderful time of the year in her Dr. Seuss hat.
