January Editor’s Notes

-

As we kick off another calendar year, please know how very privileged we think we are for every one of you, our dedicated readers, who allows us to contribute, in some small way, to your participating and connecting to what’s happening for the good of this vibrant community.

Furthermore, PN would not be published monthly and updated daily online if it weren’t for our generous group of sponsoring advertisers that helps provide buckets of ink, large rolls of newsprint, bells and whistles for PN’s website and everything it takes to distribute 25,000 copies every month. Thanks for supporting PN advertisers whenever possible.

Update / Mariko Jane Penick, two-weeks-and-four-days old, mostly slept during her grandparents’ visit on Jan. 14, 2018.

During recent visits to Chicago to visit our first grandchild, we observed large billboards with friendly reminders to be good neighbors and keep sidewalks shoveled whenever it snows. Consider that great advice for this Midwestern winter with its frosty beginnings.

Note how we slipped in our exciting news about the birth of our granddaughter. Getting to know little Mariko Jane Penick, born Dec. 27, 2017, to son Jeff and his wife, Katherine (Nomura), has been a prosaic reminder that life is precious and it goes by quickly.

We appreciate what we’ve learned every day bringing readers hyper-local news via this independently-owned publication going on 17 years. We think it’s important to do what we can in an outspoken, community-spirited way today; because, poetically speaking, you can never be sure whether this is your “winter” or not. Though we’ve not considered making resolutions for years, many of our contributing columnists have used their space to express their resolve for the New Year. And we’re grateful for their longtime commitment and original comments.

No promise tomorrow guarantees that you’ll see all the seasons. Ask questions today. Recognize consequences and unintended consequences. Listen to varying opinions with an open mind. Be a critical thinker. Enjoy a rich life.

Be forever mindful of kindness. Say important things that you want to your loved ones and remember to hope they’ll appreciate you for all the things you’ve aimed to do for them in all the years past.

As we read in a greeting card, “Life is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to all individuals who come after you. Make it the best it can be.”

Again, thanks for reading!

Longtime readers are familiar with our later-January publication date set years ago to give everybody a chance to relax after the holidays and to avoid having PN tossed out with the Christmas wrapping paper. PN will strive to be authentic and factual with news, chock full of content you can use in print every month and digitally daily.

Recent weeks have been devoted to digital maintenance and upgrades to our website to better serve readers with stories and photos that PN began saving in that humongous cloud back in 2012.

Enjoy all the days of January. We’re going out on a limb here (the one that just held 11 huge black birds out back) to predict that the best years in Napervillle begin with a winter season that seems like a Midwestern winter. Bundle up. Any deep freeze is temporary.

Cheers to the changing seasons, peace and prosperity.
