Naper Settlement invites visitors to kick-off the summer season and relive the past at Hometown Picnic from 1PM to 4PM on Sunday, June 11, at Naper Settlement located at 523 S. Webster St. in Naperville. Hometown Picnic will feature music, games, a historic fire pumper demonstration and Touch-A-Truck vehicles, as well as an apple pie and brownie baking competition.

All activities are included with admission, which is $12 adults, $10 seniors (62+) and $8 youth (4-12). Naperville residents (with proof of residency) and members receive free admission.

“Hometown Picnic is the perfect opportunity for families to experience some historic outdoor fun, see some trucks up close and let loose their competitive spirit!” stated Naper Settlement’s Director of Learning Experiences, Sheila Riley, in a news release. “With plenty of old-fashioned games, activities, and competitions, visitors of all ages will enjoythe warmer weather, while they picnic on our beautiful 12-acre grounds.”

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic to enjoy the outdoors with friends and families. Games and activities include a hula hoop contest, a cookie walk, 3-legged race, corn hole, croquet, lawn twister and a Joe Naper Fire Pumper demonstration at 2:45PM.

Food will be available for purchase that will include hot dogs from John’s Rib House and cookies from DeEtta’s Bakery.

Bakers need apply!

More bakers are needed for the apple pie and brownie baking competitions. Past year’s apple pie entries included double-crust pies, streusel-topped pies and apple-fruit combinations. Although Naper Settlement invites apple pie bakers of all ages, the museum encourages brownie bakers be 6-12 years old.

Bakers are encouraged to enter the contest by contacting Jessie Sekiya at (630) 305-5252 or email her at sekiyaj@naperville.il.us. Rules are available on the Naper Settlement website, www.napersettlement.org.

Familiar faces continue to serve as pie and brownie judges

Pie judges include Naperville City Councilwoman Patty Gustin, Naperville City Councilman John Krummen and Naperville Heritage Society Board member Mark London. Brownie judges include Naperville City Councilwoman Judith Brodhead and DeEtta’s Bakery Owners Kevin Tyschper and Morgan Tyschper.
