Naperville Art League invites artists to enter ‘#SillySeriousness’ art competition

For the fourteenth consecutive year, the Naperville Art League (NAL) is inviting individuals to enter an original work of art into its public art contest.

This year’s theme, “#SillySeriousness,” was inspired by the collaboration between the arts organization and fellow nonprofit, Loaves and Fishes Community Services. By creating a partnership for the competition, both groups hope to reach a larger audience and raise awareness of their presence in the community.

Eligibility for participation in the competition is open to high school students, college students and adults.  Entrants may submit pieces interpreting the theme in virtually any media. Pieces may be representational or abstract and must be original in design, concept and execution.

Cash awards will be given for Best of Show and Awards of Excellence.

#SillySeriousness runs March 15 through March 25

The works will be exhibited at the Naperville Art League’s Fine Art Center & Gallery, 508 N. Center St. March 15 through March 25.

A special reception and awards ceremony will be held from 2PM to 4PM on Sunday, March 19.

“This is one of our most popular shows,” said Debbie Venezia, executive director of the league. “It is always amazing to see how the participants execute their interpretation of the theme.”

Entries for “#SillySeriousness” will be accepted at the Naperville Art League’s Fine Art Center & Gallery any Wednesday, Thursday or Friday from noon until 4PM or Saturday from 10AM to 4PM through February 25, 2017.

An entry form, available at the League’s Fine Art Center & Gallery or at www.napervilleartleague.com, must be completed and affixed to the piece along with an artist’s statement of 100 words or less explaining how the entry relates to the theme.

Hope Art Auction, Jan.7

Cat Guardians, a Lombard based no-kill, cageless cat shelter, once again is hosting its annual Hope Art Auction at the Naperville Fine Art Center and Gallery. The event runs from 1PM to 3PM Sat., Jan. 7, with a preview from noon to 4PM on Fri., Jan. 6. The Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery is located at 508 North Center Street.

Now in its 8th year, the silent auction fundraiser will give attendees the opportunity to bid on high-quality cat-themed items for home, body and soul.  Paintings, prints, and jewelry will be among the offerings and bidding will start well below market value.

“Cats offer many benefits to their human companions and ask for very little in return,” wrote Debbie Venezia, executive director of the NAL.  “Even if pet ownership is not an option for you, please stop by for an afternoon of wine, snacks, and beautiful artwork. Lucky winners will take home original art and will leave happy knowing they contributed to a meaningful cause.”

Funded by donations and staffed by volunteers, the mission of Cat Guardians is to find homes for abandoned and stray street cats deemed undesirable due to age, medical conditions or socialization issues. The group has facilitated over 2,500 adoptions in its 28 year history.

The auction supports its No-Cat-Left-Behind policy.

FYI: Cat Guardians, Inc. is located at 932 E. St. Charles Rd., Lombard, IL. 60148 For information, call (630) 543-3395 or email info@catguardians.org. Hours are 4PM-8PM Tuesdays and 11AM-3PM Saturdays and Sundays.
