December Editor’s notes

-

Tradition. Tradition! Nearly a third of all annual giving traditionally takes place during the holiday season in December.

And in Naperville, in addition to reaching into our pockets to help fulfill unmet needs, our generous residents also contribute time and plenty of it all year long. Folks who find their passion tell us they contribute more than 52 hours a year of service to every cause they support, beyond the energy many use to serve on foundations, boards and commissions.

One of those bright ideas of service can be experienced throughout December at Naper Settlement where the Rotary Club of Naperville-Sunrise presents its 4th annual Naper Lights. This year, the colorful attraction is just steps from the Christkindlmarket, an open-air market, making its debut in Naperville glistening with special gifts as well as tastes and sounds for the season.

Steeped in German heritage with portrayals of the lives of early 19th century settlers, Naper Settlement celebrates this city’s beginning, growth and future. As former Mayor Chet Rybicki used to say, Naper Settlement is where you can “Visit Yesterday Today.”

This year, more than ever, the cherished European tradition inspired by the 16th century Christkindlmarket in Nuremberg, Germany, turns the outdoor history museum into an enchanting holiday village where families and friends can create memories to last a lifetime.

And dating way back even further before this wondrous season attracted holiday illumination, people throughout the world strived to brighten the short days of the darkest month of the year.

During those ancient times, folks celebrated festivals of lights, welcoming the return of more sunlight as the days began to grow longer after the winter solstice, arriving this year at 4:44AM on December 21.

Civic Plaza along the Riverwalk is just east of the Santa House at Webster Street.

Hot off the heels of the Little Friends Parade of Lights, the chill of December also provides opportunities to bundle up and stroll along the lamp-lighted Riverwalk where the Civic Plaza features a holiday tree aglow near a Nativity scene, menorah and the Santa House.

And when you hear the “Ding, Ding,” you’ll know the Naperville Trolley is touring the city’s grand illumination N.E.W.S. and throughout downtown. Trolley La La La, La, La, La, La.

As we wrap up 2016, we’re mindful of historic events in November that forever will make a difference. We’re also reminded of folks who continually tell us to find “unity” in community and to focus on the challenges that unite us.

In addition to new leadership in Washington, D.C., the Consolidated Election in Illinois kicked off on Nov. 28 when eight hopefuls filed to run for Naperville City Council. By the end of December, other candidates to serve boards for the school districts and park district also will be running. The 2017 campaign will feature other races, too. Watch for all to fall into campaign mode with regular visits to PN’s Election and Voter’s Guide that will be hosted online beginning after the first of the year.

For now, our young editorial staff still is following the Cubs. The team’s World Series victory didn’t change his love for the Chicago team.

Bear with us as this issue greets you with a big “W” theme. Without encouragement, we’ve discovered many other Cubs’ fans believe, too.

The best gifts come from the heart. Enjoy the season of giving with comfort and joy.

Peace to all children, women and men of good will.

And as always, thanks for reading Positively Naperville.
