October Events at North Central College

Through Oct. 6, Art exhibit: NCC presents expressionistic paintings by Sharron Ott through Oct. 6 in the College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St. Her pieces speak to the beauty of nature, bringing awareness of creatures that are endangered and precious.

Through Oct. 16, Art exhibit: NCC presents a collection of paintings by Bogumil Bronkowski and Nathan Motsinger through Oct. 16 in the College’s Schoenherr Gallery, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Bronkowski plays with the sense of space and depth in his paintings, while Mosinger’s work incorporates raw materials with the process of layering, editing and creating spaces of the unknown.

Oct. 1, Music: NCC presents performer, songwriter and producer Richard Marx in concert at 8PM Saturday, Oct. 1, in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago. Marx has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, including “Hold on to the Nights,” “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting.” Tickets are $65 and $55.

Oct. 6-9, Theatre: NCC presents “Time Wasted,” a play written by E. H. Lupton and directed by North Central senior Sarah Fons. The story centers on the relationship between daughter Julia and her alcoholic mother Nancy and their struggle to communicate after many years of separation and a lifetime of addiction. Five performances will be staged at 7:30PM Oct. 6-8 and at 2PM Oct. 8-9 in the College’s Madden Theatre, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $5/adults and $3/students and seniors.

Oct. 7, High school football: NCC hosts the Wes Spencer Crosstown Classic football game matchup between Naperville Central and Naperville North high schools. Kickoff is at 7:30PM Friday, Oct. 7, in NCC’s Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, 455 S. Brainard St. For ticket information contact the high schools.

Oct. 9-Dec. 1, Art exhibit: NCC presents its first-ever juried art exhibition featuring North Central faculty, staff and students. All mediums will be showcased Oct. 9 through Dec. 1 in the College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St.

Oct. 10, Visit Day: High school students and their parents or guardians are invited to attend NCC’s Visit Day on Monday, Oct. 10, in the Wentz Concert Hall lobby, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Visitors can choose to attend a morning session with check-in at 9:30AM or a later one at 11:45AM. Both sessions offer opportunities to take a walking tour and attend informative sessions on financial aid, academic highlights and student life, with optional tours of athletic and fine arts facilities. Oct. 15, Transfer information session: NCC will host an information session Saturday, Oct. 15, for transfer students. Visitors can learn about academic choices, transfer admission process, scholarships and financial aid. Registration begins at 9:30AM in Smith Hall at Old Main, 30 N. Oct. 15, Cardinal football: The NCC Cardinals battle for the Little Brass Bell, an annual competition vs. Wheaton College, in conference football at 7PM Saturday, Oct. 15, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, 455 S. Brainard St. Tickets are $6/adults and free to students with a valid ID and to children ages 3 and under. For more information visit northcentralcardinals.com/football.

Oct. 15, Music: The DuPage Symphony Orchestra presents “Reach for the Stars” at 8PM Saturday, Oct. 15, in NCC’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. The concert features Mozart’s final symphony, “Jupiter” Symphony No. 41 in C Major, and Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” a seven-movement orchestral suite. Tickets range from $38 to $15.

Oct. 16, Music: NCC welcomes string duo Wil Baptiste and Kev Marcus as Black Violin at 6PM Sunday, Oct. 16, in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. With an equal footing in both classical and hip-hop music, Black Violin features a wide range of R&B, jazz and rock music elements in its debut album “Stereotypes.” Tickets are $50 and $40.

Oct. 19, Drama: As part of its Anti-Hate Week series of events, NCC hosts the drama “They Call Me Q” at 7PM Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Madden Theatre, 171 E. Chicago Ave. This play is the story of an Indian girl growing up in the Boogie Down Bronx who seeks balance between the cultural pressures of her traditional parents and acceptance in her new culture. Off-Broadway actor Qurrat Ann Kadwani transforms into 13 characters who have shaped her life, including her parents, Caucasian teachers, Puerto Rican classmates and African-American friends. Oct. 21-Dec. 11, Art exhibit: NCC showcases “I AM American,” a group show curated by Sergio Gomez Oct. 21 through Dec. 11 in the College’s Schoenherr Gallery, 171 E. Chicago Ave. The exhibition uses a variety of styles, visual forms, symbols and metaphors to provide a broad view into the bicultural experience and meaning of being American.

Oct. 21, Music: NCC presents “An Evening With Jazz Pianist Chris White” at 8PM Friday, Oct. 21, in the College’s Madden Theatre, 171 E. Chicago Ave. A member of the Paul Marinaro Trio, Chicago’s White has performed at the Jazz Showcase, Ravinia, Green Mill, Andy’s and many more. Tickets are $20/adults and $15/students and seniors.

Oct. 22, Dance: NCC welcomes the extraordinary artistry of Parsons Dance at 8PM Saturday, Oct. 22, in the College’s Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave. Internationally renowned for creating and performing contemporary American dance, Parsons Dance evokes sensuality, athleticism, ingenuity and virtuosity. Tickets are $35, $25 and $20.

Oct. 22, Music: Chicago a cappella presents its concert, “The Birds and Bees: Songs of Nature and Naughtiness,” at 8PM Saturday, Oct. 22, in NCC’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. For tickets visit chicagoacappella.org.

Oct. 23, Music: The DuPage Symphony Orchestra presents two performances of “Out Of This World: A DSO Family Halloween Concert” at 2 and 4PM Sunday, Oct. 23, in NCC’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. This family-friendly concert features excerpts from The Planets, Star Wars, E.T. and more. Tickets ranges from $10 to $5.

Oct. 27-30, Theatre: NCC’s theatre department presents the drama “Mosque Alert” by playwright Jamil Khoury with direction by Carin Silkaitis, North Central associate professor of theatre. Four performances will be staged at 7:30PM Oct. 27-29 and at 4PM Oct. 30 in the College’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. Inspired by the Ground Zero mosque controversy in New York City, “Mosque Alert” tells the story of three fictional families living in Naperville whose lives are interrupted by a proposed Islamic Center on the site of a beloved local landmark. Tickets are $10/adults and $8/students and seniors.

Oct. 29, Parade: NCC invites the public to view its annual Homecoming parade starting at 12:45PM Saturday, Oct. 29. The parade takes place on the College’s campus and begins at North Brainard and East School streets and proceeds south on Brainard to Championship Plaza, where a pep rally will be held. Oct. 29, Cardinal football: The NCC  Cardinals will play their Homecoming football game vs. Carroll University at 2PM Saturday, Oct. 29, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, 455 S. Oct. 29, Music: Chicago Sinfonietta presents “Día de los Muertos,” the dance of life and death, at 8PM Saturday, Oct, 29, in North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets range from $60 to $10; to purchase visit chicagosinfonietta.org.

Oct. 30, Music: NCC opens its concert season at 1PM Sunday, Oct. 30, with its annual Homecoming Concert, featuring the Cardinal Chorus, Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorale, Concert Choir, Concert Winds, Symphony Band and Jazz Combo I. The student performance will be held in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. The concert is free but tickets are required.
