naper_fireAt 12:44AM today (Sept. 21, 2016) , Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received an automatic fire alarm for a multi-family residential building in the 800 block of Beaumont Drive and dispatched the appropriate units.

While fire companies were enroute to the alarm, a call from the premise reporting a fire in an appliance prompted PSAP to upgrade the alarm to a Full Still response (2 engines, 1 truck, 1 ambulance, 2 rescue vehicles, and 2 shift commanders).

In less than six minutes from the initial alarm, the first engine arrived on scene and reported heavy smoke showing from the first floor of the multi-family residence. The alarm was immediately upgraded to a General Alarm response bringing an additional 1 engine, 1 truck, 1 ambulance, and 1 squad to the scene.

First arriving fire companies assisted with the systematic search and evacuation of residents from the building while they simultaneously advanced a hose line into the structure to locate and extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. Fire crews remained on scene checking for hidden fire, ventilating smoke from the structure, and ensuring that all residents were evacuated and accounted for. Companies on scene investigated and determined that the fire originated in a first floor laundry room clothes dryer.

Representatives from the Naperville Transportation, Engineering, and Development (TED) department arrived and deemed the unit that experienced the fire to be uninhabitable. Naperville Fire Department representatives assisted in relocating the residents of the stricken unit.

All other occupants of the residence were allowed to return to their homes once the scene was cleared by the fire department and TED representatives.

No civilians or firefighters were injured as a result of this fire.

The presence and proper operation of the buildings automatic fire alarm system was credited for the rapid notification and safe evacuation of residents from the fire building as well as early notification to the fire department.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by representatives from several other agencies including the Naperville Police, Aurora Fire, Naperville Electric, Naperville Transportation Engineering and Development, and NICOR Gas.
