Week 4 Football Capsule: Benet (2-1, 0-1) @ St. Patrick (2-1, 0-1)

Benet (2-1, 0-1 East Suburban Catholic) @ St. Patrick (2-1, 0-1 East Suburban Catholic), 11:15AM on Saturday

Last week: Benet lost to Notre Dame, 29-14; St. Patrick lost at Nazareth, 56-28.

Storyline: Benet goes on the road in East Suburban Catholic Conference play for the first time Saturday morning at St. Patrick looking to get back on track.

The Redwings fell victim to Jimmy Topping, Tim Simon and the Dons at home last week as Simon caught seven passes for 138 yards and a TD while kicking three field goals.

Topping ran for 130 yards for the Dons, who saw Michael Valdez intercept Redwings’ junior quarterback Jack Sznajder twice while adding in a fumble recovery for good measure.

Sznajder was 18-of-43 passing for 207 yards with a touchdown pass to Karl Schmidt and three interceptions.

Running back Marty Dosen was responsible for Benet’s other score against the Dons, courtesy of a nine-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Last week, St. Patrick was blitzed by Nazareth, the defending Class 6A state champions as the Roadrunners put 56 points up.

The Shamrocks, however, can score themselves as a pair of 50-point games against Taft and Glenbrook South will attest.

Niko Childress ran for 290 yards in the Shamrocks’ 55-34 victory over Glenbrook South in Week 2.

The Redwings beat the Shamrocks, 28-7, last year.

After this week, Benet gets Marist at home and travels to Nazareth and Carmel for its next three games, so a victory Saturday is imperative.

Benet coach Pat New on St. Patrick: “(Paddy) Devlin, he played receiver last year and I think he’s playing quarterback this year – he’s their great playmaker. They’ve got some good playmakers. Their running back (Childress) ran for over 200 yards against Glenbrook South and they got a couple receivers who can really make some big plays. Dan Galante always has his guys prepared. They’re always a hard-hitting, tough football team. So it’ll be a tough game for us.”
