Unprecedented. When an unpublished Theodore Giesel picture book manuscript came to light recently, the publishing world was thrilled. The announcement came earlier this year with great fanfare. Because, of course, Giesel is none other than the late, great Dr. Seuss.
Oh the fun, fun, fun, fun bookstores have set, as we celebrate the release of What Pet Should I Get?
Seuss’ newly discovered book will tickle fans young and old. Best guess estimates are that the manuscript was done between 1958 and 1962, as the brother and sister characters in the book are the same as the siblings in 1960’s classic One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Seuss died in 1991.
Oh, great, great, great, great!
Be sure to save this date, date, date, date.
But the fun lives on! Anderson’s Bookshops in Naperville and in Downers Grove have a special day, Tuesday, July 28 —the new book’s release date— set aside just to honor an author who made reading fun for generations. And he continues to now with the new title. It’s a publishing party, and Anderson’s will spotlight the new book with activities and special events for both communities.

In Downers Grove: Opening ceremonies at Anderson’s Bookshop, 5112 Main St., (630)-963-2665, will present social media darling/rescue celeb dog, Kale Chips. He is also up for adoption!
Happy Dog Barkery, 5118 Main St., will partner with Anderson’s and will host storytimes at noon and again at 2PM. The noon story will be dog-centric, including reading therapy dogs in attendance, and the 2PM story will be cat-centric, with adoptable kittens available.
Back at Anderson’s Bookshop at 4PM, the day will wind up with a donation going to foster dog group, One Tail at a Time, based on the number of What Pet Should I Get? copies sold.
About the Book: This never-ever-before-seen picture book by Dr. Seuss about making up one’s mind is the literary equivalent of buried treasure! What happens when a brother and sister visit a pet store to pick a pet? Naturally, they can’t choose just one! The tale captures a classic childhood moment—choosing a pet—and uses it to illuminate a life lesson: that it is hard to make up your mind, but sometimes you just have to do it.
Told in Dr. Seuss’s signature rhyming style, this is a must-have for Seuss fans and book collectors, and a perfect choice for the holidays, birthdays, and happy occasions of all kinds.
