ABOUT THE BOOK / In Getting Real celebrity news anchorwoman Gretchen Carlson opens up the conversation of what it means to be an ambitious and attractive career woman in America today. From her childhood in Anoka, Minnesota, where her family’s life revolved around the Lutheran church that her grandfather led as minister, and where her bright future as a violin prodigy both thrilled and burdened her, through college at Stanford, her win as Miss America in 1989, and her first in-the-trenches years as a cub reporter on local television stations in Richmond, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Dallas, Gretchen Carlson’s rise to anchor of The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson on FOX News Channel is truly a story of dedication and perseverance.
In Getting Real, Carlson holds nothing back, addressing the judgments she faced first as Miss America—including judge William Goldman labeling her “chunky”—and later as a woman building a career in the competitive world of broadcast television. Reflecting on her marriage to star sports agent Casey Close and her time as a working mother, Carlson brings to life the joys and the challenges of raising children while pursuing a career at CBS and FOX. Carlson shows us that faith, conviction, and family buoyed her as she pursued her dreams and continued to challenge those who tried to dismiss her as a beauty queen.
Carlson’s humor, sharp insight, and journalistic integrity are as engaging on the page as they are on television. With her inspirational drive for success and her ability to laugh along the way, she is a woman not afraid to lean in to the real world, to chase her dreams and to embrace opportunity fully. An unceasing advocate for respect and equality for all women, she shares her own struggles with body image, pageant stereotypes, and building a career, encouraging women to strive for their goals. This open and warm-hearted memoir celebrates the woman behind The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson and reminds us of the power of courage and perseverance.
ABOUT ANDERSON’S BOOKSHOPS / Sponsoring this upcoming program is Anderson’s Bookshops, specializing in book sales, author events, booksignings, and building a sense of community, learning and fun. The store has been helping Naperville readers for six generations. In 1878, Oswald’s pharmacy began selling books as a service to customers. So successful was that side of the business that it became an independent entity in 1964. Based in downtown Naperville, the store has grown with the community ever since. A second location is also open in downtown Downers Grove, at 5112 Main Street (630)-963-2665. A gift shop, Anderson’s Two-Doors East, at 111 W. Jefferson Ave., in Naperville, opened in the fall of 2009. A new Anderson’s Bookshop opens later this summer in the heart of La Grange.
