-

Updated Post June 7, 2015 / Mid-afternoon, plenty of kids’ activities in the backyard and live music on stage upfront attracted folks to this family-friendly event that started with the threat of rain, then warmed up in the sunshine.

A colorful children’s village, including a sensory area, provided places and private quiet spaces to learn about the autism spectrum.

Bungy jumping, bouncing, an obstacle course, a sand box and large tinker toys were among the play activities at one end of the large field where youngsters gravitated for the fun of it.

“This event is about raising awareness for autism,” said Executive Director Walter Johnson, who spent the afternoon greeting visitors and expressing gratitude for all the volunteers. “This is a great space for an event like this, especially since it’s right next to Turning Pointe.”

The DuPage Children’s Museum set up hands-on activities at the Backyard Bash.

Volunteers from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, known as VIPS, were on hand to “deputize” youngsters and give opportunities to take a front seat in the marked vehicle.

Members of VIPS assist the Sheriff’s Office by attending various public events throughout the year to provide information on the community resources and programs available to promote public safety and “Too Good for Drugs” programs for all ages.

According to volunteer Samantha Karkosz, today’s event was among the first appearances of the VIPS this season throughout DuPage County.

“We’re hoping they’ll invite us back next year,” Karkosz said. “The kids are enjoying taking a seat in the DuPage Sheriff’s vehicle. Next time we might bring either ‘Bert or Ernie,’ the Hummer or our armored vehicle … named to be friendly for the kids.”
