New diner opens in Naperville

For a very long time, Wilma’s Cafe was a popular diner-type breakfast joint at the southwest corner of Washington at Jefferson in downtown Naperville.  Ken and Wilma knew all the regulars by name and welcomed everyone to the good-value meals they served across the counter and in the booths that ran along the wall. They served breakfast, brunch and lunch. Yet, more than anything, Wilma’s was known for its friendly service.

After the downtown establishment burned beyond repair about 15 years ago, Wilma’s Cafe reopened along Ogden Avenue on Naperville’s northwest side, tucked away in a small strip center, open for breakfast and lunch, six days a week.  Over time, unless somebody told you where Wilma’s had moved, you likely didn’t know it was there.

“Wilma’s closed about six months ago,” said Zena Besiri, one of the owners of Nora’s Cafe, a new eatery that re-opened in the cozy spot in early November. And all the owners of the family-owned independent business aim to let you know it’s there.

Breakfast and lunch served

Nora’s Cafe hosts a fresh new interior with a bright, cheerful retro-ambiance.  The restaurant sparkles and so does the friendly wait staff.

Most booths are for four individuals, but tables can be arranged to accommodate larger parties.

The all-inclusive breakfast and lunch menu is plentiful, but not too overwhelming.  Specials include various versions of Eggs Benedict, omelettes, French toast and pancakes as well as combination platters with salads and sandwiches. Portions are large and the server was most accommodating when providing to-go containers for leftovers.

One gentleman said he judged the quality of the home-style cooking by “the hash browns, poached eggs and fresh coffee”— and he gave Nora’s Cafe a thumbs up.

For starters, the casual restaurant is open from 6AM to 2PM seven days a week.  Space is available for meetings, private parties and special events after hours.

In a city where residents always seem to be looking for another place to have breakfast meetings, Nora’s Cafe just could whet those appetites, and its owners are eager to be available for after-hours special events, too, by reservation.

Nora’s Cafe is located at  1224 W. Ogden Ave, just east of River Road. For more information, call (331) 229-3696.
