The City of Naperville estimates $9,000 remains to distribute to low- to moderate-income residents for sidewalk replacement. Therefore, the deadline for property owners to apply for the Sidewalk Assistance Program through the Social Services Grant Program has been extended until Fri. May 24, 2013.
The City developed the Sidewalk Assistance Program this year to help eligible low- to moderate-income residents pay for their share of the Sidewalk Replacement Program. The assistance program allocates $15,000 in funds to help residents; funds are being awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. As of May 1, the City has an estimated $9,000 left to allocate.
Residents must fill out an application and submit required documentation to verify their eligibility. Applications for the Sidewalk Assistance Program, as well as eligibility requirements, are available online at www.naperville.il.us/socialservicesgrant.aspx. Printed copies of the application may be obtained by calling Grants Administrator Anna Straczek at (630) 305-5315.
Applications will be accepted until 5PM on Fri., May 24. Residents who apply for assistance will receive a letter in June 2013 notifying them whether or not they have been approved for the program.
Through the Sidewalk Replacement Program, residents are required by the City’s Municipal Code to repair and replace broken and defective public sidewalks adjacent to their property and share the cost of doing so with the City. For more information, visit www.naperville.il.us/sidewalkreplace.aspx.

Editor’s Note: Though many residents must depend on cars to move throughout Naperville, everyone who maintains neighborhood sidewalks is appreciated. Also, this time of year springtime walkers are grateful to homeowners who cut back low hanging branches on trees along the parkway that can hit pedestrians as they navigate neighborhoods, especially at night.
