Just in time for the spring running season, Metea Valley High School has selected Running the Edge for its all-school reading program. According to publicist Scott Douglas, the book, written by Olympian Adam Goucher and Tim Catalano, is a “how-to running book that also has advice on overcoming adversity.”
Eric Anerino, an English teacher at MVHS where he also coaches the girls’ cross country and distance track team, suggested Running the Edge to kick off this year’s all-school reading program with the two Olympians who will be visiting the high school on April 4 for an assembly. The two runners then will make presentations to the English classes the following day. While students read, they also can train for the 5K run slated for June 1 on the campus of Metea, located 1801 N. Eola Road in Aurora.
The One School-One Book program will end with an opportunity for all school, staff, parents at Metea as well as the feeder middle schools to participate in the run. About 2,500 students in grades 9-12 attend Metea Valley.
Running the Edge will be the school’s fourth school-wide reading initiative. First, educators read the book, and then hand off their copies to students who want to participate. Each student is then asked to pass along their book to a friend or family member. This process continues throughout the spring and summer. In the fall, participating students will receive extra credit in English, and the book is discussed in class.
According to Anerino, Running the Edge has “wide audience appeal and real-life relevance, and its themes align with the school’s core values.”
For more information about the new book published on March 25, 2013, a brief is posted online.
