Greetings From Our Readers – September 2023

-

Mark Twain was correct when he noted, “He was as shy as a newspaper is when referring to its own merits.” That’s why we appreciate what readers say about Positively Naperville and this active place many spirited folks call home.

TO PN:

Either the grade of the lawn was raised or the boulder has sunk! (Reference to photo of commemorative rock in Central Park, featured on page 2 of August PN.)

In less than 100 years, the memorial to the first DuPage Courthouse has sunk nearly 4 feet! By-the-way, no one I know knows anything about the black square stone front-and-center below the plaque! Could it be from the first courthouse?

Editor’s Note / Compare above image with photo from “Telling Tales of Tubaman,” PN August 2023.

A large rock in Central Park that stands on the site of the first DuPage County Court House holds a plaque commemorating the DuPage County Centennial in 1939. Look closely and the historic monument appears to be sinking. (PN Photo, July 2023)

TO PN:

I just want to say first of all that I just came across your publication and I’m so impressed and happy to have read such a meaningful local newspaper. I am new to Naperville! I just moved here from Orange County, CA, to be near my family and raise my son in this beautiful city 🙂 I found so many great suggestions of events and organizations in your most recent issue! I love too, that I was able to really feel the deep roots and authentic character of Naperville through the spotlights and stories that were written.

Thank you!

P.S. I loved the little Ron Burgundy “ad” that said, “Don’t just have a great day, Have a Naperville day.” That made my son and me laugh so hard after being here for just a few days and we cut it out and put it on our fridge.

To PN:

My mother always used to say, “God doesn’t care how much money you make. He cares what you do with it.”

Naperville

Editor’s Note / Meg’s memory inspired an idea for a new feature that will be titled, “My mother always used to say.” We always have appreciated ideas from our readers. In 2001, the Paul Mitchell Family came up with “Catch Someone Reading PN.” In 2002, Lynette Klingbeil took PN from cut-and-paste to computer production. Many years ago John Harvard had the idea for “Worldly Words.” Tom Tortorich created “Lasting Impression.” And Jeff Penick suggested “Gender Chuckles.” Thanks to all.

To PN!

I’ve written many headlines, but never one as clever as, “Ever Wonder If Ron Keller’s Dogs Liked Tubas?”

Kudos. Maybe the reason I like that headline so much is that Kay and I loved being at Ron’s finale, which he handled beautifully.

TO PN:

The Wheatland Township senior luncheon was today (Aug. 16, 2023) at Wheatland Salem Church. I gave a program on creating a fall planter.

Everyone loved getting a copy of Positivity Naperville!

PN Ombudsman
An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
