Firefighters extinguish restaurant fire on Freedom Drive

-

At 6:51PM on Monday, April 11, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a call from an alarm monitoring company indicating a fire alarm had activated in a single-story restaurant (Buttermilk Cafe) located in the 1700 block of Freedom Drive. A single engine was dispatched to investigate the alarm.

At 6:56PM, Engine 3 arrived and discovered black smoke coming from the roof vent. The incident was upgraded to a general alarm, which brought a total of 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel to the scene.

Because the business had already closed for the evening, fire companies had to force their way inside. Once access was gained, they discovered a fire in the kitchen that was being held in check by the sprinkler system. A hose line was quickly stretched inside, and the remaining fire was extinguished.

At 7:24PM, the fire was deemed under control. Crews remained on the scene another 30 minutes performing overhaul and ensuring no hot spots remained.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police and Lisle Woodridge Fire Protection District. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There were no injuries to any occupants or firefighters while operating on scene. The building was deemed to be uninhabitable by the Naperville Transportation, Engineering, and Development Team. The blaze is estimated to have caused $25,000 in damages.

Report submitted by Daniel Smith, Division Chief, Naperville Fire Department.
