The Naperville Police Department recently completed a round of tobacco/alternative nicotine product compliance checks throughout the weekend on Sat., March 26 and Sun., March 27, 2022. The compliance checks were performed at 72 Naperville businesses to determine if local tobacco/alternative nicotine product retailers are complying with the minimum-age tobacco laws that prohibit the sale of tobacco/alternative nicotine products to persons under the age of 21.
69 of 72 Naperville businesses passed compliance checks
Sixty-nine establishments passed the compliance check. The following three (3) establishments failed to successfully pass the compliance check, resulting in City Ordinance citations for selling tobacco/alternative nicotine product to a person under the age of 21 years old: Jewel/Osco, located at 1227 S. Naper Blvd.; CBD Vape Smoke, located at 4003 Plainfield-Naperville Rd. #105; and Smoke XL, located at 1003A W. Ogden Ave.
With the help of a grant awarded by the Illinois Department of Human Services Tobacco Enforcement Program, the Naperville Police Department educates local tobacco/alternative nicotine product retailers on minimum-age tobacco/nicotine product laws and the importance of verifying the age of customers before selling age-restrictive products such as tobacco/alternative nicotine products. Tobacco/alternative nicotine product retailers are given a retailer education packet and notified that the compliance checks are going to occur in the near future.
Updated, March 30, 2022 / FYI: Both the business and the employee are eligible for a fine. An employee can be fined anywhere from $100 to $200. Depending on repeat violations, a business can be fined $100 to $5,000. There would have to be a hearing if a suspension of a license were the potential consequence. —NPD
The Naperville Police wish to remind the public and the news media that a charge is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
