August calendar briefs and things to do through Labor Day 2021

-

Above / Riverwalk Architect Charles Vincent George imagined Civic Plaza, the popular gathering place with the Dandelion Fountain. He also gave the name “crown jewel” to the winding brick path when interviewed for a Chicago Tribune story during early development of the Riverwalk for the City’s sesquicentennial in 1981.

Recently Chuck George said, “…(1981) was a long time ago, but it seems like yesterday to me. I always thought the ultimate architectural product would be a skyscraper… My skyscraper is the Riverwalk and all those wonderful people that use it every day.”

Throughout the year, Moser Tower with the 72-bell Millennium Carillon along the Riverwalk is illuminated at night with different colors to heighten awareness for important initiatives such as blue for Autism Awareness Month in April. When the sprinklers are running in the summertime, visitors to Rotary Hill also can try to catch rainbows. Currently Moser Tower is undergoing some rehabilitation to its exterior. Carillon concerts, canceled for now, likely will be scheduled this fall at noon on Saturdays and 3PM Sundays through New Year’s Eve.
