Art Talk – Fair Weather

-

At the time this article was written, Illinois was in the Bridge Phase, allowing for increased capacity limits and repealed face covering regulations for fully vaccinated people. If metrics stabilize and decline, all sectors of the economy could resume normal operations in July. Even though all of this could change at the drop of a mask, event planners and venue operators are hustling to get their shows on the road.

The Naperville Woman’s Club (NWC) is among the front runners as it prepares for the Naperville Fine Art & Artisan Fair, which will be held at Naper Settlement on June 26 and 27. Now in its 61st year, the juried event will welcome 100 regional and national artists who are eager to get their businesses back on track.

“We’re happy to be one of the first art fairs to return, and to bring back the joy of presenting original and immersive art to our community,” stated Julie Cunningham, NWC co-president.

Efforts to ensure safety for festival goers and artists are in place and include slightly fewer booths to allow for social distancing. Cunningham said, “Patrons can expect to see some new artists and features at this year’s Fine Art & Artisan Fair, but we’ve purposely maintained many of the features that make the fair a tradition for many area families.”

Attendees are welcome to experience diverse 2D and 3D artwork in a variety of mediums along with gourmet food options, artists’ demos, and a kids’ activity tent. NWC invites shoppers to place bids on artist-donated artwork at its annual silent auction with profits supporting the organization’s philanthropic endeavors. ClaySpace will also be on site with its Empty Bowls Project, a pottery sale that raises funding for local food pantries.

The community mural project is returning this year after debuting in 2019. Upon completion, this group effort will comprise over 200 squares painted by willing art customers of all ages that will be assembled in 12’ x 8’ patchwork replication of a pre-selected piece by exhibiting artist Rahmon Olugunna. Chicago Chalk Champ Shawn Hays and balloon twister Lica Lorraine bring more interactive fun to the fair, giving art lovers, families, and visitors a safe segue into normalcy.
