Here at Dog Patch we have a long history of helping people keep their heads over giving animals as gifts. It’s almost never a good idea.
Now if mom and dad are feeling it’s time for the family to have a pet for Christmas, that’s something we can get behind. But I have to say, we have seen everything.
Sometimes kids decide mom should have a puppy. Boy friends or girl friends want to give a gift of a pet. Some siblings even shop for siblings.
Most of these situations will raise a red flag. Our go-to motto always has been: GIFT CARDS NOT GIFT PETS!
Honestly, if a person is not involved in the decision, there likely is not a bond with that animal. It is that bond that makes the relationship work. It is important for us to help avoid pet returns after the holidays.
Giving a pet as a gift is a delicate balance for us. We will always put the animal first!
The Grinch is loose at Dog Patch! Stop in and try to find him. He’s in other independent businesses around Naperville, too. Collect enough finds and you could win great prizes! Ask for details or visit Indieboundnaperville.com to get to know your independent business community.
Happy Holidays from all of us at Dog Patch!
Editor’s Note! And remember that Dog Patch Pet and Feed stocks plenty of bird seed with many healthful choices for the birds that frequent backyard feeders this time of year. Bird watching or “birding” is an educational and wonderful hobby for all ages, especially in the winter. Look forward to National Bird–Feeding Month in February.
