Fire Prevention 24-7 – Summertime safety

-

New senior initiative

In an effort to keep Naperville seniors safe, the Naperville Fire Department will be providing Senior Home Fire Safety Surveys to those residents living independently, that request a visit.

The purpose of this home fire safety survey is to identify features in your home that might make your residence susceptible to fire or injuries due to falls. The second purpose is to advise you of the steps you can take to eliminate or reduce these hazards.

Through this program, Naperville senior citizens receive in-home safety information as well as fire and fall prevention tips. Every home visit includes a written home safety survey, along with smoke detectors (if needed), a carbon monoxide detector, kitchen fire extinguisher, and other goodies.

Grilling and fireworks

Summer weather means cookouts, Fourth of July fireworks, and all sorts of campfire fun as families across the country take advantage of the warm temperatures. Let’s not forget family reunions, picnics and that long-anticipated summer vacation. Roasting marshmallows by the bonfire is fun, but it’s also important that everyone stays safe by observing a few simple safety tips.

Annually more than 8,000 Americans are injured by fireworks and grill fires. More than half these injuries occur during the first week of July.

Don’t let barbecue grease build up. Whether you’re using a charcoal or a gas grill, it’s important to keep it clean to prevent accidental grease fires caused by all the gunk that can accumulate on a grill over time. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Additionally, extra propane tanks should be kept outside or in a shed, not in the garage.

Did you know that if you can open the lid to your grill, and it is touching the house, it is too close? Place your grill on the opposite side of the deck or patio while grilling.

In addition to outdoor cooking, improper use of fireworks causes more than 6,000 fires and more than $8 million in damage. Did you know that sky lanterns are illegal in Illinois? And that sparklers reach up to 1,800 degrees?! Keep them out of small hands, and leave the fireworks to the professionals.

Summertime should be a time for fun and making happy memories. Knowing a few safety tips will ensure that everyone has an enjoyable summer!
