UPDATE, April 23, 2019 / The 17th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held from 10AM to 2PM Saturday, April 27, at law enforcement agencies throughout the country.

In connection with National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Edward-Elmhurst Health is reminding the community that it has safe medication disposal kiosks at Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals for the public to dispose of dangerous medication.

The goal is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means to dispose of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

A safe medication disposal kiosk is located near the South Lobby (in the walkway between the South parking garage and South Lobby off of Osler Dr.) of Edward Hospital, 801 S. Washington St., Naperville.

The program is partially funded by the Edward and Elmhurst Medical Executive Committees.

Bring unwanted, unused or expired controlled medications to one of the locations and drop them in the kiosk – just like putting a letter in a mailbox.

Accepted items: unused or expired controlled medications.

Restricted Items: needles/syringes, liquids, aerosols, inhalers, thermometers, illegal drugs.

The Edward pharmacy will monitor the kiosk, collect and seal the unwanted medication and arrange pick-up of the drugs on a regular basis.

FYI, EVERY DAY / In addition to the one-day events that are promoted, the City of Naperville maintains permanent prescription drug drop boxes that are available to the public year-round at locations throughout the community.

In addition to the Police Station, every Naperville fire station has a sealed drop box located outside of the building accessible to the public 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Original Post, April 26, 2015 / The Naperville Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are encouraging the public to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft by ridding their homes of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Drop off at Naperville Police Station & Fire Stations

Bring your pills for disposal to the Naperville Police Department at 1350 Aurora Avenue on from 10AM to 2PM on Saturday, April 29, during the 13th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. No needles, syringes or liquids are accepted.

Last October, Americans turned in 366 tons (over 730,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,200 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 12 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 7.1 million pounds—more than 3,500 tons—of pills.

During the annual Public Safety Open House on the first Saturday in October, NFD staff invites folks to learn about RX Drop Off.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Never flush or toss in trash

In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

In addition to this one-day event, the City of Naperville maintains permanent prescription drug drop boxes that are available to the public year-round at locations throughout the community.

Every Naperville fire station has a sealed drop box located outside of the building accessible to the public 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

A sealed drop box in the Naperville Police Department lobby also is accessible to the public from 7AM to 8PM, Monday through Friday, and from 10AM to 6PM on Saturdays, excluding holidays.
