Dye Easter Eggs naturally with onion skins / Do try this at home!

Bryan Ogg recently gathered with his artist friend Carolyn Finzer to naturally dye and design Easter Eggs. They created brown color from onion skins. Black came from the oak leaves. Yellow was from dandelions. And the blues were from scilla and lungwort.

“We walked her beautiful yard and found all sorts of unique shapes and an abundance of blue flowers, mostly scilla,” emailed Ogg. “We tightly wrapped the botanicals around the eggs with nylon swatches (from panty hose) and immersed them in cold water and onion skins. The water was brought to a boil and the eggs allowed to cook.

Unwrapping the eggs under cold water revealed beautiful patterns. (This natural process for coloring eggs is available with a search online.)

“What wonders from God!” said Ogg. “The promise of new life.”
