Focus on Safety – New-age Home Security

-

When giving community presentations on burglary prevention, I am often asked about security cameras and video doorbells. When used in addition to traditional home security measures, these systems have definite advantages.

One of the biggest and most obvious benefits of installing security cameras or video doorbells is that they deter crime. Camera technology has improved greatly in recent years, making the image quality of these systems remarkable. A would-be burglar might have second thoughts about targeting a home if they thought they could be caught red-handed and identified.

If illegal activity does occur in the vicinity of the camera placement, the security system has the advantage of potentially capturing valuable evidence for police. Having cameras installed in strategic places is a tremendously valuable resource when building a criminal case for prosecution. Good video footage has been instrumental in solving numerous crimes.

Video doorbells also allow you to see who’s knocking at your door and even talk with them through a small built-in camera and microphone. The person at the door does not know if you are home or not … the doorbell’s WiFi connection transmits information directly to your smartphone, tablet or other connected device so you can answer your door from anywhere!

There are many different types of video doorbells on the market, so be sure to do your research and choose the best model for your home security needs. Do you need a motion sensor to send you a notification anytime there is activity near your door? Do you need a system with night vision technologies to allow you to see who’s on your front porch at any time of the day or night? Researching your needs first will allow you to know what power type, resolution, field of view, app support and other features are available and would work best for your home.

Security cameras also come in a variety of packages ranging from a simple system for a few hundred dollars to elaborate systems costing thousands of dollars. Before purchasing, determine your needs. Figure out how many cameras and what type of coverage you want, whether a wired or wireless system will work at your home and whether you need a basic system or a more advanced system with zoom, pan and tilt camera features. Also, don’t forget to inquire about the cost of installation to help you stay on budget.

Before making the decision to install a security camera system or video doorbell, do your research. Making an informed decision and help you choose a system that fulfills your needs and expectations without breaking the bank.
