UPDATE, June 21, 2018 / The proposal across Ferry Road from CityGate Centre for an Event Center/Ice Arena for Naperville was received enthusiastically by Planning and Zoning Commissioners who gave unanimous approval to rezone the land on Corporate Lane near Monarch Landing for the construction of CityGate North.

Focused on community, developers said the arena will host a USHL hockey team, a league for student athletes, ages 16-21, who aim to play professional hockey.  The plan also is to cover the rink with a hard floor for other events, like concerts, with seating for up to 6,000.

Two residents of Monarch Landing stepped forward to express concerns about lighting, sound, pedestrian safety and parking, reminding the commissioners that Monarch Landing is a home for 463 residents. Commissioners listened and were confident that all of the residents’ concerns will be addressed.

“Little issues can be fixed,” said Commissioner Anthony Losurdo. “It’s a first-class project and well needed in Naperville.

Three motions received unanimous votes from the 7-member Plan Commission to move the project forward.

Plan Commission Chairman Kamala Martinez graciously congratulated the petitioners of CityGate North.

“Congratulations,” Martinez said. “You have affirmative approval on all three of the motions tonight, moving forward with the project.”

Original Post, March 6, 2018 / Calamos Real Estate LLC of Naperville today announced it acquired 25 acres of land, extending its existing 31-acre, Rte. 59 and I-88 CityGate Centre campus to the north side of Ferry Road where it will build DuPage County’s largest multi-use, indoor ice, sports, entertainment and expo facility.

The site, to be known as CityGate North, was purchased from Senior Care Development of Harrison, NY, which owns and operates the adjacent Monarch Landing Senior Living Community.

“CityGate North will serve our community in many ways; providing more opportunity for residents to participate in sporting events, music and other family-friendly entertainment, and creating jobs and generating revenue for the area as a whole,” said John P. Calamos, Sr., owner, Calamos Real Estate. “We are proud to be driving this effort in Naperville and for all of DuPage County and the surrounding areas.”

“Naperville needs this,” said Naperville Development Partnership President Christine Jeffries. “With its prime location off of I-88, it will be a regional draw and will help grow tourism.

“From ice and other sporting events to concerts and expos, it will help fill our local hotels and restaurants,” she added. “We’re very excited about its potential.”

Ground breaking for the 245,000-square-foot, 4,500-seat facility, which will house two regulation-size ice rinks, could occur as soon as late spring or early summer with possible occupancy in fall 2019.

“There is nothing else in the area like the venue we have planned,” said Calamos SVP Ken Witkowski. “CityGate North will add to the vibrancy of CityGate Centre in this corner of Naperville and DuPage County.”

Additional partnerships and anchor tenants will be announced in the coming months.
