This has been a special year for our exuberant, caring high school volunteers! In August 2017 we created the first Loaves & Fishes Teen Board. We have had great leadership by President Ryan Reynolds, Vice-Presidents Andrew Nauman & Faith Isaac, and Secretary Chandhana Voleti. The students’ first project was a Book and Toy drive. A winter wonderland was created with the more than 500 items they collected, and the teens helped the children select toys and books. It was an amazing effort with great community support!
Another first was the creation of a beautiful mural by the National Honors Art Society at Metea Valley High School. The art club created a beautiful colorful eight-foot mural displaying our core values: compassion, community, service, dignity and hope.
“I am so proud of all the hard work and dedication these students have put forth in this project,” said Karen Popovich, Art Teacher and National Art Society Sponsor. “Collaborating on this project has been a great learning opportunity.”
Although school, sports and music keep our teen board very busy, they sought another way to support our children. The first Loaves & Fishes Teen Challenge will be held on Sunday, June 10 featuring a food packing relay, scavenger hunt and trivia contest. The entry fee is $5 per person and funds will be used for our summer nutrition program to fill the gap for many children who are not receiving school breakfast or lunch meals. Loaves & Fishes offers teen volunteering opportunities for those that are between 14 – 17 years old; visit loaves-fishes.org/volunteer to sign up.
Congratulations to our graduating teens! We invite our newly graduated eighth graders to join our volunteer activities. Make this a summer when you make a difference in our community!
