Will this trivia team win the 2018 WSI Quiz Night championship on June 5?

Above / What’s in a name? The team of regulars pictured here changes its name monthly depending on the mood in the Cottage Room where the highest score on WSI Quiz Night is all about bragging rights… Yes! Bragging rights!

UPDATE, June 10, 2018 / Congratulations to the team of Quizzie McGuire that won the 2018 West Suburban Irish Quiz Night Championship on June 5 at Quigley’s Irish Pub!

Congrats also to Sue Gensler, pictured below with Kevin Gensler, who answered the Positively Naperville Bonus Question correctly: What bridge is John Harvey and Dan Casey reading Positively Naperville at in Galway? “Quiet Man Bridge,” she answered to win a big duck for the 3rd Annual Riverwalk Duck Race on Aug. 15, 2018.

Remember, WSI Quiz Night at Quigley’s Irish Pub skips July, then returns at 7PM on Tues., Aug. 7.

Original Post, June 4, 2018 / Beginning at 7PM on the first Tuesday of the month, October through June, teams of two to eight players, mostly members of the 21-plus crowd, surround tables at Quigley’s Irish Pub for the trivia competition known as West Suburban Irish Quiz Night. By the end of the evening, more than 40 edible and/or silly prizes likely are claimed by enthusiastic witty and wise winners who make the most of every score card, using a wide variety of useless knowledge to answer questions by category.

Observers always are surprised at some of the good-natured ribbing that comes from adult players of all ages who want to receive perfect scores in an evening when four rounds of 10 trivia questions each make a Quiz Night.  Prizes are awarded after every round.

Recognition goes to teams placing first, second and third

Prizes also go to teams placing first, second and third with the highest scores.

Competitive players also vie for the monthly Team Spirit Award and the Best Team Name Award.  In fact, teams are permitted to change their name every month in order to compete with the best of them in that category again and again.

Longtime WSI member Kent Schielke, a former science teacher at Ss. Peter and Paul, helps WSI Irish President and local attorney Chuck Corrigan write rounds of questions for the four-round contest.

WSI member Mike Reilly serves as the emcee, with occasional wisecracks (some off mike) as he reads ten questions for each round.  Mary Corrigan and Nancy Quigley join the crew at the corner table to serve as scorekeepers.

During a recent WSI Quiz Night, a tie-breaker question for sought-after Sugar Babies gave pause for some serious thinking from team leaders.

By the end of play, usually about 9PM, one team is the victor. Yet, dramatic tie-breakers are common. The Spirit Awards are announced to the team that sets itself apart with authentic enthusiasm and an attitude of gratitude. The prize for the best team name also is presented.

During every WSI Quiz night dozens of prizes, wrapped and decorated with curly ribbon, are lined up in the corner by the score-keeping statisticians, creatively put together by Mary Corrigan.

Quiz play is free. Competition is stiff and challenging. No electronic devices are allowed. You can’t call home for help.

Did you hear that Positively Naperville has written a bonus question for a bonus prize for the 2018 WSI Quiz Night championship game?

Take a quack at WSI Quiz Night Championship Game / 7PM Tues., June 5

At 7PM Tues., June 5, teams will compete in the Seasonal Championship Quiz, finishing the year of competitive trivia games. Everyone is welcome to put a team together. Play is throughout Quigley’s inside and on the patio, weather permitting.

Watching the competitive nature, all in fun, might give a newcomer the impression the prizes were of high value. They’re not. Players say the prizes do come with big bragging rights, however. And in June, the prizes come with championship trophies, said Chuck Corrigan.

Remember! The WSI Quiz Night skips July and September due to holiday weekends.  After the championship rounds on June 5, the next WSI Quiz Night begins at 7PM on the first Tuesday of August, August 7.

While the evening may feature the championship game, first-time players with no experience are welcome to join the competition with just as much chance to win as longtime regular players. Come for the fun and you’ll likely go home with a prize.

Quigley’s Irish Pub is located at 43 E. Jefferson Avenue in downtown Naperville.
