North Central College Big Band will jazz up Madden Theatre on March 9

North Central College Big Band will perform March 9 with jazz vocalist Janice Borla and jazz saxophonist Mitch Paliga in the Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, just steps from downtown Naperville.

NAPERVILLE, IL (Feb. 22, 2018)—The North Central College Big Band, under the direction of Tim Coffman, will present a concert featuring two guest artists, jazz vocalist Janice Borla and jazz saxophonist Mitch Paliga. The concert, a new addition to North Central’s Jazz Faculty Concert Series, will be presented at 8PM on Fri., March 9, in the Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave.

The musical program features music specially arranged by and for Borla and Paliga, in addition to the band’s own repertoire.

Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased from the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or online at www.northcentral.vbotickets.com.

Janice Borla

Described as a “one-woman jazz tornado” and “genius – pure genius” by Jazz Times Magazine, vocalist Janice Borla has performed with such jazz talents as Clark Terry, Charlie Haden, Bunky Green, Sheila Jordan, Bobby Watson and Peter Eldridge. She has presented concerts and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Germany and Japan, including three appearances at the Chicago Jazz Festival. Her CD “Promises to Burn” was named one of DownBeat Magazine’s “Best CDs of the Year,” and received numerous accolades from noteworthy jazz critics. Christopher Louden called Borla “Among the best, boldest and most innovative vocalists around.” Bob Protzman said Borla is “A stunning singer with a lustrous voice and the technique, imagination and daring of the best improvisng instrumentalists.”

Mitch Paliga

Performer, educator and composer Mitch Paliga has been described as “the next great voice on soprano saxophone” by Cadence Magazine. As a member of actor and musician Gary Sinise’s “Lt. Dan Band” since 2007, Paliga has performed in Afghanistan, South Korea, Japan, Kuwait, Europe, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Canada as well as throughout the United States, averaging 40 shows a year. He has also performed with Vinnie Colaiuta, Christopher Cross, Danny Gottlieb, Steve Rodby, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra and many others. In 2017 he received a Global Music Awards bronze medal for his recording of his original composition “QP Doll” from “Fall Night.” He has recorded more than 30 original compositions and arrangements with a variety of artists, and is a founding member of the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective.

Tim Coffman

Tim Coffman is one of the most active trombonists and jazz educators in the Chicago area. 

He has performed with a host of performing artists, including Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Natalie Cole, Louie Bellson, The Woody Herman Orchestra, Ron Carter, Kurt Elling, Tito Puente, Tom Harrell, Al Jarreau, Henry Mancini, Stevie Wonder, Diane Schur, Joe Lovano, Lennie Niehaus, Slide Hampton, Diana Krall, Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga and many others.  Coffman has performed and judged at various high schools, universities and jazz festivals in the United States, and has been on faculty at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop since 1992.
