May Editor’s Notes

-

More than a few times, folks have asked what’s on my bucket list. Counting my blessings that I enjoy just about every minute of putting this monthly publication together, I’d say finding funds for buckets of ink and humongous rolls of newsprint is high on my list of things to do for the near future.

Naperville’s spirit of service is contagious. All ages catch it. Attending recent springtime events such as the American Legion Citizens of the Year and the Jaycees Distinguished Service Awards put that can-do spirit front and center.

Then along comes May and thoughts turn toward the end of the school year, Mother’s Day, outdoor events and Memorial Day.

Since 1928, Naperville has hosted its traditional Memorial Day Parade, paying tribute to all men, women and their families that have given the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Every day I pray for buckets of freedoms that are protected by the U.S. Constitution. If you’ve yet to read the fundamental law of America, it takes about an hour. Since you likely won’t remember every article or amendment, keep a copy handy.

Certainly the First Amendment is one to memorize: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

When the 2017 Memorial Day Parade steps off at 10:30AM in downtown Naperville, spectators wearing Buddy Poppies and waving American flags again will line the parade route to honor Gold Star families riding in vintage vehicles and classic cars, demonstrating their rights to assemble peaceably.

At 12:15PM, another Memorial Day Observance will begin in Central Park where the public also can pause to show respect and gratitude for service. The Naperville Municipal Band will take the stage in the Community Concert Center to perform patriotic music. NMB Director Ron Keller is enthusiastic about a new version of the Armed Forces medley.

During the 30-minute ceremony this year’s featured speaker, Ryan Park, will recite his winning speech about the U.S. Constitution, presented during the 2017 American Legion Oratorical Contest.

While many spectators head for Central Park after the parade, other individuals simply attend the Memorial Day Observance as a standalone event. Individuals and families are welcome to find a bench about noon. Patriotic music and short speeches begin at 12:15PM, complete with the ceremonial laying of the wreath at the memorials.

Yet, by Memorial Day, you’ll likely have discovered the merry month of May is packed with many other choice traditions such as the ADOPT Walk, Honor Flight Fundraiser, Derby Party for Hesed House, Jaycees Lobster Day, Civil War Days, North Central College Cornerstone Week and golf outings, just to get you started.

Cheers to the pursuit of happiness, liberty and justice for all. Peace.
